Bento is a Medicaid health plan approved service provider and covered benefit that uses SMS text messaging to connect Medicaid health plan members with curated groceries. The groceries are tailored for individuals by Registered Dietitians based on their unique disease risk factors, nutritional requirements and cultural preferences. Bento grocery orders are delivered from a local grocery store.
About the Role
The objective of the Nutrition Health Educator is to provide remote nutrition education and support. The educator will conduct personalized 1:1 coaching sessions via phone and/or lead cooking demonstrations via Zoom to promote healthy eating habits using Bento’s medically tailored grocery orders, to strengthen lasting behavior change and improve the healthcare outcomes of Bento’s member base.
Responsibilities & Objectives
The Nutrition Health Educator will be responsible for supporting the Nutrition Department in the management, planning, and execution of the following tasks:
1:1 Coaching via Phone:
- Conduct individualized, culturally relevant nutrition coaching sessions with members over the phone, offering practical advice and strategies for using Bento grocery orders, while adapting to the diverse circumstances and challenges faced by low-income community members.
- Connect with members to discuss their current grocery orders, highlighting seasonal items, new order offerings, and provide personalized recommendations, tips, and creative ideas to help them make the most of every Bento grocery order.
- Inspire customers to try new ingredients, recipes, or meal ideas based on their dietary preferences and health goals.
- Create a positive, enthusiastic environment that gets members excited about their next Bento order.
- Identify and address barriers that prevent members from adopting healthier eating habits and encourage them to set realistic and achievable goals related to their nutrition.
- Empower members with the knowledge to become autonomous in making informed decisions about their dietary choices and how those choices impact their individual health outcomes.
- Accurately document member interactions, preferences, and suggestions in Bento’s charting system in a timely manner.
- Ensure accurate billing for services provided, including tracking time spent on member engagement and support.
Cooking Demonstrations via Zoom:
- Develop a fun and engaging curriculum for nutrition classes, including an interactive Zoom cooking demonstration highlighting ingredients found in Bento’s medically tailored grocery orders.
- Create healthy recipes using ingredients from Bento’s grocery orders that maximize flavor and nutrition with affordable ingredients, align with members' health conditions, and are easy to follow at home.
- Engage participants by explaining the nutritional benefits of ingredients and offering cooking tips and meal planning strategies on maximizing available food, such as using leftovers creatively and proper storage techniques.
- Encourage member participation and engagement through Q&A sessions and real-time feedback.
- Accurately document class attendance and participation in Bento’s charting system promptly.
Educational Resource Development:
- Develop digital educational materials, such as recipes and nutrition tips highlighting ingredients in Bento orders, to support coaching and demo sessions.
- Ensure all resources are accessible and easy to use for members.
Client Communication and Support:
- Maintain regular communication with members via phone, email, or text to provide ongoing support and motivation.
- Respond to member inquiries and provide additional resources or guidance as needed
Program Evaluation:
- Collect feedback from members on the effectiveness of coaching sessions and cooking demos.
- Track member progress and attendance throughout the program
Deliverables
- Conduct agreed-upon 1:1 coaching sessions via phone per week.
- Host agreed-upon cooking demonstrations via Zoom per week.
- Development and distribution of digital educational materials, including recipes and nutrition tips.
- Monthly reports on 1:1 coaching sessions and cooking demo attendance,
Reporting
The Nutrition Health Educator will collaborate with the Clinical Operations Lead and provide updates during weekly or bi-weekly virtual meetings.
Compensation
The Nutrition Health Educator will be compensated at a rate of $25-$35/hr for services rendered. Pay will be commensurate based on experience.
Other Requirements
Experience and Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition Sciences, Health Education, or similar degree OR a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Health Coach/Educator, Promotora, or Community Health Worker working with underserved communities
- Experience working with WIC, SNAP benefits, food pantries, low-income, and/or multi-ethnic, underserved communities
Required Skills:
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple member interactions.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Enthusiasm for creating a fun, informative, and inspiring member experience
Other Requirements:
- The Nutrition Health Educator must maintain all necessary certifications and licenses.
- The Nutrition Health Educator will adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.
- Reliable internet access and necessary technology (e.g., phone, computer, webcam) are required to conduct virtual sessions.
