Q&A with Diana
In what ways do you celebrate your heritage?
I celebrate my heritage in all of the ways! I make Cuban food at home multiple times a week, I speak my native tongue with others, I regularly dance in my kitchen to son, salsa, and rumba, and I learn about and honor our history from my elders and community. I am lucky enough to live in a place where I am reminded of my heritage every second of every day, from Cuban coffee in the morning, to Cuban abuelos (grandpas) congregating at my local grocery store's ventanita (little window). In my nutrition and diabetes counseling work, I celebrate my heritage by ensuring my community knows our foods are nourishing and belong on our plates.
